Levi’s unprecedented plan to cut its carbon footprint



Two years ago, a factory sewing jeans for Levi’s partnered with the company in a new experiment to reduce carbon emissions and substitute renewable energy in all of its own factories. And by co-working with experts in the international Finance Corporation, they archived around a 20% reduction in carbon emissions and saved approximately $1 million in a year.  


Levi’s aims for new goal with a new plan. By 2025, the company has planned to cut the emissions in all of its own facilities by 90% in comparison to the emission levels in 2016. This includes a plan to use only renewable energy in those building. As a results, the plan will cut the emissions by 40%, including in the supply chain. The impact will become bigger in the industry by our challenge. “ the most interesting part of this new approach, is in supplier side” said Michael Kobori from Levi’s Strauss &CO. (From Inside Levi’s ambitious plan to cut its carbon footprint) Also apart from its supplier chain, the company itself only accounts for 51% of the total footprint such as in its retail stores, making fabric, and sewing clothing e.t.c... Thus, it’s indispensable that the company works with its supplier in reducing further emissions. Also, Levi’s is even seeking out ways to help consumer reduce the effect, because consumers are actually responsible for approximately 1/3 of company’s total footprint.

Reducing carbon emissions through the program may be unlikely. However, if the program is successful as the company helps its suppliers improve, other brands – which often share the same suppliers with levi’s, will also benefit. The company hopes that these others will follow with targets of the Science Based Targets Initiative like Levi’s does. “We wanted to show people in the industry what is possible.” said Kobori.
